Today I decided that I needed to travel to the nether because I would like some glowstone for nice looking lights and netherrack for my fireplace. Here are some tips and tricks for surviving in the nether: First, be prepared for any problem so that you can react quickly. This includes occasions like if you fall in lava, accidentally hit a pigman, or if you are attacked by a ghast. Second, always have a clean and organized inventory (This one kind of relates to the first tip). Always keep the necessary items on your hotbar, like blocks, a pickax, a sword, food, and a bow (If you can bring potions, otherwise don't worry about it). Here is an example of a clean inventory:
Third, get in and get out fast. When you are in the nether, even a small slip can end in your demise, so get in, grab what you need, and get out fast. If you are going to stay for a long period of time in the nether, plan for it, make sure you have an excess of blocks and food. Fifth, bring bowls. This may sound crazy, but in the nether, red and brown mushrooms spawn pretty frequently. So that if you run out of food, you will still have a last resort. Sixth, leave a trail of torches or blocks so that you can find your way back to the portal (or you can just write down the coordinates).
Anyways, when I was in the nether I grabbed lots netherrack and glowstone so that I won't be needing to come back anytime soon. On a random note, I almost burnt down my house with the fireplace I was talking about... Now I think I will keep it unlit. Here are some tips on how to make a fireplace that won't burn your house down: Make sure there are non-flammable blocks 3 blocks above and to each side, as well as 1 block in each direction. Also, make sure the fire is enclosed partly (on each side). Lately, I have been spending some time doing chores, gathering wood, mining, etc. Luckily this paid off and I finally got enough diamonds to make a diamond pickaxe and an enchanting table. Now I just need to find some books...
